How to follow up after a job application (with examples)

Last updated 9 October 2026

Short answer. Follow up once, about a week after you apply, with a three-sentence note: name the role and when you applied, restate one reason you fit, and ask politely about the next step. If there is no reply after another week, move on.

When to follow up

Who to write to

The recruiter or hiring manager named in the posting, or the person you corresponded with. If no one is named, reply to the application confirmation if it allows replies.

A follow-up after applying

Subject: Senior Product Analyst application

Hello Jordan,

I applied for the Senior Product Analyst role last Tuesday and wanted to say I'm still very interested. I've spent four years running pricing experiments, which matches the experimentation focus of the role.

Is there anything else I can send, and could you share what the next step looks like?

Thank you,
Maria

A thank-you after an interview

Thank you for the conversation today. I enjoyed hearing about the pricing roadmap, and our talk about test design made me more excited about the role. I look forward to hearing about next steps.

What not to do

Questions

Is it annoying to follow up?

One short, polite message is normal. Repeated messages are what annoy people.

Should I follow up by phone?

Email is usually better; it lets the reader answer when they have time.

What if the posting says no calls or emails?

Respect it, and put the effort into your next application instead.

Conxto checks live postings against your résumé, tailors each application from your real experience and prepares the letter and answers. Copilot: you send it. Autopilot: it applies for you.
