How to write a résumé summary (with examples)
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. A résumé summary is two or three sentences at the top of the page: your professional identity, the strongest proof that you can do the target role, and the kind of role you want. Write a new one for each kind of role you apply to.
The three parts
- Identity: your role and level. "Data analyst with four years in e-commerce."
- Proof: one or two results that match the target role. "Built the pricing dashboards three regional teams use weekly; ran 12 A/B tests."
- Direction: what you want. "Looking for a product analytics role focused on experimentation."
Examples
Career starter: "Computer science graduate who built and shipped two web apps used by student groups. Strong in Python and SQL; looking for a junior backend role."
Experienced: "Operations manager with eight years running warehouse teams of up to 40 people. Cut picking errors by redesigning the shift handover. Seeking a regional operations role."
Career change: "Former teacher moving into instructional design. Designed a year-long curriculum for 120 students and built course materials in two authoring tools."
Common mistakes
- Adjectives instead of evidence ("hard-working, passionate team player").
- An objective about what you want from the employer, with nothing about what you offer.
- One summary for every application.
Questions
Do I need a summary?
It is optional, but it is the first thing read; a specific one helps a reader place you in seconds.
Summary or objective?
A summary. Objectives describe what you want; summaries show what you offer and where you want to use it.
