How to answer the notice period question
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. State your contractual notice period plainly, for example "four weeks", and add whether it might be shortened by agreement. Then give a realistic earliest start date so the employer can plan.
Find the real number
Check your contract or ask HR. Notice periods often differ by role level and length of service.
Example answers
- "My notice period is one month. I'm available from 1 March."
- "Three months by contract; my employer has agreed shorter periods before, so earlier may be possible."
- "I'm available immediately."
Don't promise what you can't deliver
Saying "two weeks" when your contract says three months creates a problem at offer stage. Honest and specific is better.
Questions
Does a long notice period hurt my chances?
