How to answer "What are your salary expectations?" on an application
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Give a researched range whose lowest number you would genuinely accept, and say it depends on the full package. If the form forces a single number, use the middle of your range, and keep your answer consistent through the process.
Research first
- Salary ranges published in similar postings.
- Pay surveys for your role and level.
- People in the role you can ask.
Answer formats
Free text: "Between 62,000 and 70,000 a year, depending on the full package and responsibilities."
Single number field: the middle of your range.
If the posting states a range
If it fits you, say you are comfortable within it. If it is below your floor, apply only if you are willing to discuss it openly.
Avoid
- A range so wide it says nothing.
- A floor you would not accept.
- Different numbers to different people at the same employer.
Questions
Can I write "negotiable"?
You can, but a range is more useful and often required to move forward.
Should I state my current salary?
Only if you want to and where it is legal to ask; you can answer with expectations instead.
