How to answer work authorisation and visa questions
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Answer work authorisation questions exactly as asked, based on your current legal status, and say clearly if you would need sponsorship. These questions are often automatic filters, so an inaccurate answer can end an application or an offer later.
Read the question carefully
- "Are you legally authorised to work in this country?" is about now.
- "Will you now or in the future require sponsorship?" includes future needs.
Keep a fact sheet
Write down your status, its expiry date if any, and whether you need sponsorship. Reuse the same accurate answer every time.
If you need sponsorship
Focus on employers and roles that say they sponsor. Mention it plainly in the letter when relevant; it saves everyone time.
Never guess
If you are unsure how your status applies, check with an official source or an immigration adviser before answering.
Questions
Will saying I need a visa get me rejected?
Some roles cannot sponsor; it is better to know early and focus on the ones that can.
Should I mention my visa type?
Answer the question asked; give details when the employer requests them.
