How to search for a job while you're still employed
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Search discreetly while employed: use your own devices and time, schedule interviews early, late or at lunch, keep doing your current job well, and tell no one at work until you have a signed offer.
Practical rules
- Personal email and phone, never work equipment.
- Interviews outside core hours, or use leave.
- A lower weekly number of applications, all well matched.
References
It is normal to ask that your current employer not be contacted until an offer is made.
Profiles
Updating a public profile is fine; announcing that you're "open to work" publicly is a choice to make carefully.
Questions
Should I tell my manager?
Usually not until you have a signed offer.
Is it easier to get hired while employed?
Many find it easier to negotiate from a stable position.
