How to tailor a résumé to a job posting (without inventing anything)

Last updated 9 October 2026

Short answer. To tailor a résumé to a job posting, list the requirements the posting states, find the line on your résumé that proves each one, and reword that line in the posting's own terms. Keep every fact (employer, dates, numbers, tools) exactly as it is, and leave out what you do not have.

Step by step

  1. List the requirements. Copy every skill, tool and responsibility the posting asks for into a list. Requirements in the first half of a posting usually matter most.
  2. Match each one to evidence. Next to each requirement, write the résumé line that proves it. A requirement with no line is a gap, not a rewrite.
  3. Reword, do not invent. Rephrase the matching line with the posting's words: "ran 12 pricing experiments" becomes "designed and analysed 12 pricing experiments". Same work, same number.
  4. Reorder. Move the lines that match the posting's top requirements to the top of each role and the summary.
  5. Name the gaps. If a requirement is missing, say so in the letter or prepare an answer. Do not add a skill you cannot defend in an interview.

Questions

Is it honest to tailor a résumé for every job?

Yes, as long as every line stays true. Tailoring changes order and wording; it never changes facts.

Can a tool tailor it for me?

Conxto does the matching and rewording for every posting and shows each change next to your original line, so you can check it before applying.

Should I copy keywords from the posting?

Use the posting's terms where your experience genuinely matches them. Adding keywords you cannot back is the fastest way to fail an interview.

Conxto does this for every posting: it checks the fit, tailors from your real résumé and prepares the application. Copilot: you send it. Autopilot: it applies for you.
