How to answer "Tell me about yourself"

Last updated 9 October 2026

Short answer. Answer "tell me about yourself" in about a minute, in three parts: what you do now, one or two results that match this role, and why this role is the logical next step. It is a pitch for the job, not a life story.

Present, proof, next

  1. Present: "I'm a data analyst at an online retailer, where I own pricing analytics."
  2. Proof: "Over the past two years I've run 12 pricing experiments, and two of them changed our discount policy."
  3. Next: "I want to do this work closer to product decisions, which is why this role caught my eye."

Practise, don't memorise

Know the three beats and one example for each. Said naturally, it lands better than a script.

Should I mention hobbies?

Only briefly, and only if it adds something relevant or genuine.

Is it the same as "walk me through your résumé"?

Close; for that version, cover your roles in order, briefly, ending with why this role.

Conxto checks live postings against your résumé, tailors each application from your real experience and prepares the letter and answers. Copilot: you send it. Autopilot: it applies for you.
