The STAR method for interview answers, with an example
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. STAR structures behavioural answers as Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep the situation and task short, spend most of the answer on what you did, and end with a concrete result and what you learned.
The four parts
- Situation: one or two sentences of context.
- Task: what you were responsible for.
- Action: what you did, in the first person; most of the answer.
- Result: what changed, with a number if you have one.
Example: "Tell me about a disagreement with a colleague"
S: Our team disagreed with sales about which discount to test.
T: I owned the experiment design.
A: I proposed testing both options at a smaller size, wrote the success criteria with the sales lead and agreed in advance how we would decide.
R: The test settled it in three weeks, and we used the same approach for the next four experiments.
Prepare six stories
Success, failure, conflict, leadership, a hard problem, learning something fast. Most behavioural questions fit one of them.
Questions
How long should a STAR answer be?
About one to two minutes.
Can I use the same story twice?
In different interviews, yes; in the same one, pick another.
Conxto checks live postings against your résumé, tailors each application from your real experience and prepares the letter and answers. Copilot: you send it. Autopilot: it applies for you.
