Salary negotiation basics: how to ask for more, politely
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Negotiate after you have a written offer: thank them, give a specific researched number and one reason, and ask whether there is flexibility. Consider the whole package, including start date, title, remote days and training, not only the base salary.
Before you ask
- Research the range for the role and level.
- Decide your target and your walk-away number.
- Know what else matters to you in the package.
Example
Thank you, I'm excited about the offer. Based on the scope of the role and what I've seen for similar positions, I was hoping for 68,000. Is there flexibility on the base?
If the answer is no
Ask about other parts: a review after six months, a signing bonus, extra remote days, a training budget.
Keep it honest
Don't invent competing offers. If you have one, you can mention it plainly.
Questions
Can an offer be withdrawn for negotiating?
It is rare when the request is polite and reasonable.
Should I negotiate by email or phone?
Either; email gives you time to word it carefully.
