How to ask for a job referral
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Ask for a referral with a short message that names the exact role, explains in one line why you fit, and makes it easy to say yes by attaching your résumé and a two-line summary they can forward. Give the person an easy way to decline, too.
Who to ask
People who know your work first; then people at the company you have a real connection with, such as a former colleague or classmate.
A message that works
Hi Sam, I saw the Product Analyst opening on your team (link). I've spent four years running pricing experiments, which is the core of the role. Would you be comfortable referring me? I've attached my résumé and a short summary you could forward. No problem at all if it's not a good fit.
After they agree
- Apply through their referral link or as they instruct.
- Thank them, and tell them how it went.
Questions
Can I ask someone I don't know?
You can ask for a conversation first; asking a stranger for a referral directly rarely works.
Do referrals guarantee an interview?
No, but they usually mean a person reads your application.
Conxto checks live postings against your résumé, tailors each application from your real experience and prepares the letter and answers. Copilot: you send it. Autopilot: it applies for you.
