How to evaluate a job offer
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Evaluate a job offer on five things: total pay and benefits, the work you will actually do, the manager and team, room to grow, and practical terms such as location, hours and contract type. Get the offer in writing before deciding.
Checklist
- Pay: base, bonus, pension, equity, paid leave.
- Work: the first projects; does it match the posting?
- People: your manager; how the team works.
- Growth: training, promotion path, scope.
- Terms: location, remote days, probation, notice, contract length.
Questions to ask before accepting
- "What would I be working on in the first three months?"
- "Could I speak with someone on the team?"
Take a day
Asking for a day or two to decide is normal.
Questions
How long can I take to decide?
Usually a few days; ask for a specific date.
Should I accept a verbal offer?
Wait for the written offer before resigning from your current job.
