How to handle a take-home assignment
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. For a take-home assignment, clarify the scope and expected time first, solve the core problem well rather than everything, and add a short write-up explaining your choices and what you would do with more time. Staying near the suggested time is part of the test.
Steps
- Read the brief twice; ask questions if anything is unclear.
- Plan the core deliverable before extras.
- Build or write it cleanly.
- Write a half-page summary: approach, trade-offs, next steps.
What reviewers look for
- Did you solve the actual problem?
- Can they follow your reasoning?
- Is the work tidy enough to discuss?
When it is too big
If an assignment would take days of unpaid work, it is reasonable to ask whether a smaller version or a live exercise is possible.
Questions
Should I go beyond the brief?
Only after the core is solid, and say so in the write-up.
Can I use AI tools?
Follow the employer's rules; if allowed, say how you used them.
Conxto checks live postings against your résumé, tailors each application from your real experience and prepares the letter and answers. Copilot: you send it. Autopilot: it applies for you.
