How to respond to a job rejection email
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Reply to a rejection with two or three sentences: thank them, say you would like to be considered for future roles, and optionally ask for one specific piece of feedback. It keeps the door open and costs nothing.
Example
Thank you for letting me know, and for your time during the process. I enjoyed learning about the team and would be glad to be considered for future roles. If you have one piece of feedback that would help me, I'd appreciate it.
What to do next
- Note any feedback in your tracker.
- If you reached a late stage, keep the contact; teams often come back to strong finalists.
- Don't argue the decision.
Questions
Will they actually give feedback?
Often not, for legal or time reasons; asking politely does no harm.
Should I reply to automated rejections?
Usually there is no one to read it; save the effort.
