How to withdraw a job application politely
Last updated 9 October 2026
Short answer. Withdraw an application as soon as you know, with a short message that thanks them for their time and, if you like, gives a brief reason. Telling them early is a courtesy they remember.
Example
Thank you for considering me for the Data Analyst role. I've accepted another offer and would like to withdraw my application. I appreciated our conversations and hope our paths cross again.
When to withdraw
- You accepted another offer.
- The role turned out not to fit (pay, location, scope).
- Your circumstances changed.
Keep it short
You don't owe a detailed explanation.
Questions
Will withdrawing hurt future chances?
A polite, early withdrawal rarely does; disappearing can.
Should I call or email?
Email, unless you have been speaking with someone by phone throughout.
