Video interview tips that make a difference

Short answer. For a video interview, test the link and your audio beforehand, sit with light in front of you, put the camera at eye level and look at it when you speak. Keep a few notes nearby, but no full script.
Ten minutes before
- Join the link early; check camera and microphone.
- Close notifications and other apps.
- Water nearby.
Set-up
- Light from a window or lamp in front of you, not behind.
- Camera at eye level.
- A plain background.
During
- Pause a beat before answering; video has lag.
- If the connection drops, rejoin and say so calmly.
Questions
Headphones or speakers?
Headphones with a microphone avoid echo.
Should I use a virtual background?
A real, tidy background is better; virtual ones can flicker.
