Junior Software Engineer résumé example for 2026

An entry-level engineering résumé has no decade of impact to point at — so it proves itself with internships, shipped projects and selective numbers. This example is adapted from the real new-grad résumé behind one of GitHub's most-forked résumé templates: concrete internships, one open-source leadership line, and a GPA that earns its place.

Adapted from a real résumé published under Apache-2.0 — source repository. Name and contacts anonymized; the roles, stack and claims are the original author's own.

What a junior software engineer résumé has to show

  1. Internships with one shipped, named thing per role
  2. A selective-achievement number (fellowship, competition rank, admission ratio)
  3. Open-source or team-project leadership — initiative beyond coursework
  4. Coursework only where it is distinctive, never as filler

Bullets you can adapt

Every one names a system or a surface, a change, and a number. Take the shape, not the figures — substitute your own and keep them defensible.

  • Selected as 1 of 52 fellows from 2,500 applicants for a venture-capital engineering fellowship
  • Led and shipped the admin interface for a new learning-platform rollout during a single internship summer
  • Planned, designed and shipped the full stack for adding and editing speech-recognition captions — in production at a major video platform
  • Led a 4-university open-source team (MIT, Cornell, Imperial College, Helsinki) contributing to a code-review tool used daily at major tech companies
  • Graduated magna cum laude with a 3.83/4.0 GPA in Computer Science
  • Placed 2nd of 150 in a class-wide programming bot tournament

And the ones to cut

These are duties and adjectives. They describe a job title, not a person doing it.

  • Passionate computer science graduate seeking opportunities to grow
  • Familiar with Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL, and more
  • Completed coursework in algorithms and data structures

Junior Software Engineer résumé questions

What makes this example "real"?

It is adapted from the actual résumé published inside the Deedy-Resume repository under Apache-2.0 — the résumé of a real engineer who went from these internships to a full-time offer. We anonymized the identity and kept the substance.

Should a junior résumé include GPA?

Include it when it works for you — this example's 3.83/4.0 does. Below roughly 3.5, leave it out and let internships and projects carry the page instead.

I have no internships yet. What stands in for them?

Shipped projects with users, open-source contributions, and competition results — the pattern in this example still holds: one named thing per line, with a number attached where one honestly exists.

Start from this example, then make it yours.
